Hi Lils. I don’t recommend using skim milk. You could increase the quantity of dark chocolate if you don’t want to use condensed milk at all and add some honey (or not). I haven’t tested it though so I have no idea how much. Hope this helps.

My 7 year old grandson said that I needed to add caramel to it and that would make it even better. So we made homemade caramel sauce and poured a layer in the middle. Well, if you love this original recipe and you love caramel, I don’t know what to say, but be prepared. I have had to make this recipe for the past two birthday’s, it’s crazy good. A tip – use clingfilm rather than greaseproof paper – one piece to line the length of the tin, then another to run width ways. with enough extra in each case to be able to fold over the pressed-down cake. It’s way easier to manage.

We used to have tea, with biscuits from a tin, for breakfast. Mum would take all the, different, broken biscuits and make this cake; she would put a thin vanilla icing on top. Mum passed away in the late sixties and yet I am going to make it for the first time since then – it is yummy!
