A cake decorator/baker without a rolling pin is like a tennis player without a tennis racket. That is why it is important to choose the right one. Don’t just go to a shop and grab the first one (unless you are in a hurry, that is). Give it a good thought. Do your research first!
There are various types of rolling pins on the market so you just make sure that you choose the right one. If you are looking for a rolling pin for cake decorating then you might need 2 different sizes. A smaller one and a larger one.
The smaller one is used for small cake decorating projects such as fondant modelling where you need to roll out only a small amount of fondant (modelling flowers, animals, etc). It is not necessary but it’s handy. The best option here is a silicone rolling pin that is about 20 cm long. However, if you don’t feel like spending too much money when starting (maybe you just want to try out cake decorating before deciding if you are into it), you’ll be fine with the large one.
The large one should be at least 30 cm long. If you can get longer than this, it is even better. Believe me you will appreciate it in the future. Especially when rolling out fondant for large cakes and also when transferring the fondant onto a cake.
Also important is its size and shape. You may also have noticed that they are made from different materials such as plastic, wood, silicone, marble, aluminum or stainless steel. It is up to you what you prefer.
I have been using a wooden rolling pin that I bought a good few years back. It was OK then, when I didn’t do much baking and ROLLING. But now I see that it needs to be replaced any time soon by a larger & better one. I had my eyes on a long silicone one until I came across another 2 – pretty cool ones and now I have a dilemma which one is the right one for me! So I would like to introduce you to what I think are the 2 of the best ones I’ve seen so far when it comes to design, size, functionality…
1.
Some rolling pins come with removable discs that make it easy to roll your dough/fondant/pastry to the thickness you need. Also what is also important the pastry will be rolled into the same thickness throughout and this rolling pin by Joseph Joseph is one of my favorites.
2.
If you like rolling pins with handles you might want to check out this one from Tescoma. It can also be adjusted to the thickness you need.
MY ONLY ADVICE TO YOU:
- Choose the right shape/design & size and you’ll make your life easier!
