This homemade poultry seasoning is ready in minutes and more importantly more economical than its store-bought version. It also makes a great DIY hostess gift!
There is no salt in the blend so it’s also great for those who are on a low-sodium diet and need to control their salt intake.
What is poultry seasoning?
It is a blend of herbs and spices that are perfect for seasoning chicken, duck or turkey.
Where to use poultry seasoning?
You can also rub in on pork or lamb, make sauces with it or add it to a meatloaf.
Poultry seasoning ingredients
Rosemary, sage, marjoram, thyme, black pepper and nutmeg are the most common ingredients.
Some store-bought versions also contain coriander or celery seeds.
Pro tips:
Herbs from your garden would be perfect for this homemade poultry seasoning. Make sure they are dried completely before using them to make the herb blend.
To grind homegrown herbs you can use a coffee/spice grinder, but it might not work will all of them. Sage, for example is easier to chop up with a chef’s knife and that is how I do it.
The quantities of the ingredients can be adjusted, if needed.
This recipe yields about 4 tablespoons of poultry seasoning. You can easily double the recipe if you like.
Storage: Keep it in a spice jar in a cool dry place. It will last for months!
Sage is not to everyone’s liking. If you are one of those people and looking for a sage substitute, I would recommend using more thyme, marjoram and/or rosemary instead.
Make it a gift:
Double/triple the recipe and fill a spice jar, print out a stick-on label or create your own. Why not go an extra mile and attach your favorite poultry recipes too?
