First of all, the amount of fondant cutters that you can buy these days is unbelievable. There is probably everything you can think of on the market nowadays. And because of that it might be difficult to decide which ones are the ones you will need or most of all you will reuse because nothing is worse than a cupboard or a box full of various cool looking cutters that were used once only or haven’t been used at all!
So let’s talk about the Must Haves in my box:
Round cutters
I have a set of 6 ranging from 4.5 cm up until 9.5 cm in width. These are made of plastic and are double edged for plain and fluted shapes. They are a must in your cutter collection. They can be used for fondant, cookies or cakes.
Square cutters
A set of 5 plastic square cutters come in a storage box as well as the round cutters. They are also made of plastic and are double edged for plain and fluted shapes. The width of the plain edged ones ranges from 3.5cm – 7.5cm. The fluted edged ones are a bit smaller ranging from 3cm until 7cm. Also the edges are not sharp which means that you need to use a knife for trimming or buy another set with sharp edges. I simply use the knife. These ones as well as the round cutters are dishwasher safe.
Heart cutters
Make sure you have a set of heart cutters as you will be needing them quite often! Birthday cakes, Christmas cakes, Valentine’s cookies, etc. You will always find them handy. Mine are made of stainless steel.
Flower Plunger Cutters – larger ones
I have a set of 3 sunflower plunger cutters. They were my first “fancy” cutters and I was delighted with them. They still are my favorite plunger cutters and in my opinion they look really good on a cake.
Flower Plunger Cutters – small ones
Also a good thing to have, especially when doing small cakes, or anywhere really. They simply add your cake more delicate, fine look.
Alphabet and Number Cutters
When you enter any larger shop selling baking products you should see at least a few different cutters. Small or large ones, cutters or tappits, press sets, embossers, patchwork cutters. I would invest in simple cutters that are not too large or too small so you can use them on cakes of different size.
When it comes to numbers, well, you don’t need cutters that much. You can simply make them out of fondant/sugar paste (If you would like to get an idea how difficult/easy it is to make fondant numbers, have a look at our video: How to Make Fondant Numbers). They are fun to make and most of all original!
So this is a basic collection of fondant cutters that will make life of any soon to be a famous baker? way easier.
There are also many seasonal cutters (Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, …) or special occasion cutters (Christening, wedding, birthday,…) in shops or on the Internet. They all look cute and it’s hard to resist buying all of them. But as I always say, it’s good to think before buying to make sure that the specific item will be reused again and won’t just be taking up too much space in your cupboard or a box.
