How to Make Fondant Buttons

Decorate your cake or cupcakes with these cute fondant buttons! All you need is fondant, a rolling pin and some cookie cutters.

If you don’t have cookie cutters simply have a look around your house and I am sure you will find an alternative. Also do not worry if you don’t have any modelling tools. A knife, a skewer or a toothpick will do the trick too!

Tools used to make these fondant buttons:

• Rolling Pin
• Piping Tip
• Round Cookie Cutters
• Heart Cookie Cutter
• Flower Cookie Cutter
• Knife
• Sharp Point Tool
• Flower/Leaf Shaping Tool
• Blade Tool
• Shell Tool

Other:

• Fondant (white, green, pink & baby blue)

The thing about buttons is that they can actually be of any size, color, texture or material and this is why you can improvise and make your own button designs.

To make these fondant buttons that can be used as cupcake toppers I used a lot of things I found in the kitchen. The most interesting was the bottom of a powder color container that had a nice texture there.

Substitutions

Now let’s talk about substitutions for some tools because not everyone might have these at home. When working with fondant I prefer using simple tools wherever it is possible. If I use a special tool, I try to add a substitution for this. So let’s have a look at tools that can be substituted with something else when making these fondant buttons:

Sharp Point Tool
Guess what? A skewer or a toothpick will do the same trick!

Rolling Pin
You could use a glass bottle (the easiest option) – just make sure you take off the label.

Piping Tip
If you don’t have a piping tip, maybe you have a tiny round cutter. A bottle cap is another option here!

Round Cookie Cutters
You don’t have these? What about using shot glass, small jar or even a cap from a gel color tube (if you have one)

Fondant
Use any color you like! I just liked these pastel colors so I used them.

Cake Modelling Tools
Sharp Tip Tool, Flower/leaf shaping tool, blade tool and shell tool can be easily substituted with a knife or toothpick.
