Matcha Iced Tea

I have been drinking matcha iced tea almost every day for about 2 weeks now and I must say it has become one of my favorite summer drinks.

This is why I love matcha iced tea:

  • Quick preparation – 5 minutes! Yes, you only need that little time to be able to enjoy this summer drink.
  • Refreshing – nothing is better in summer than having a refreshing drink by the pool, right? But not only matcha iced tea will quench your thirst. Try fresh Lemon Mint Iced Tea, Pineapple Infused Water or Lemon Lime Cucumber Water! They are all perfect for the summer.
  • Fresh ingredients – using only the freshest ingredients without any artificial colorings or added flavors. You only drink what you put in yourself!
  • Healthy – Did you know about the health benefits of matcha tea? Packed with antioxidants, matcha boosts your metabolism, help your body detoxify and apparently it calms the mind and relaxes the body.
  • Refined sugar-free – this matcha iced tea recipe uses maple syrup as a sweetener avoiding refined sugar. However, you can use regular sugar as well.
Matcha Iced Tea Ingredients

How to make iced matcha tea

First you combine matcha tea with hot water and stir well.

Next you will need either an immersion blender or a food processor or any other kitchen appliance that can crush ice.

Ice, cold water, fresh mint and hot matcha tea are processed together for about a minute. The time will depend on how powerful your appliance is. Also the longer the processing the more liquid you should get (this is due to the ice melting).

Step by step how to make Matcha Iced Tea at home

Now because there will still be pieces of crushed ice and mint in the liquid you need to run it through a sieve.

Once done, you add lime juice and maple syrup. Stir this well and taste. If you are happy with the taste, you can serve it right away over ice and garnished with some lime slices and fresh mint leaves.

You can also keep this matcha iced tea in a fridge until ready to serve.

Tips for making matcha iced tea

  • To make this drink I recommend using either bottled or filtered water. However, if your tap water is of a good quality, you can use that one as well.
  • Before you start, make sure your blender or mixer is powerful enough to process ice. If not, use ice cold water instead (substitute 1 cup of crashed ice with ½ cup ice cold water).
  • I like using maple syrup in this recipe because it dilutes easily with cold water. If you decide to use honey, follow the recipe notes for instructions. Other sweetener substitutions are brown or white sugar.
  • Either lime or lemon can be used. My personal preference is lime though.
  • The amount of every single ingredient can be easily adjusted to your taste.
  • I served this matcha iced tea in 7oz/200ml whisky glasses. When serving this with ice, lime slices and mint you will have enough for 5 portions. Without ice count with 4 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Matcha Powder
  • ¼ cup Hot Water
  • 1 cup Crushed Ice

  • 5 tbsp Maple Syrup (See Note 3)
  • 1 Lime (See Note 4)
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions

When using immersion blender:

  • In a heat-proof jug/bottle, combine matcha powder with hot water. Mix well. Add crushed ice, cold water and fresh mint. Mix with an immersion blender for a minute or two.
  • Drain through a sieve. Add maple syrup and a juice from half of the lime. Taste and if happy, serve over ice and garnish with some mint leaves and a few slices of lime.

When using a food processor/blender:

  • In a mug combine matcha powder with hot water. Mix well. Put crushed ice, cold water and fresh mint in a food processor/blender. Pour in the matcha tea. Pulse for about a minute.
  • Drain through a sieve. Add maple syrup and a juice from half of the lime.
  • Garnish with some mint leaves and a few slices of lime + some extra ice (optional).

Notes

  1. To achieve the best taste use filtered or bottled water. If you have good quality tap water, feel free to use it.
  2. The longer you process/mix the tea in a blender/processor/… the larger amount of ice will melt. This simply means that the longer you let your processor/mixer/blender run the more liquid you will get out of it.
  3. You can use honey instead of maple syrup. If you do, I recommend adding it to warm liquid at the very beginning as honey does not melt easily in cold water.
  4. Lime can be substituted with lemon.
  5. If you feel like you prefer this drink sweeter, add more maple syrup.
  6. When you serve this drink right away, you might need to add some more ice. If not, chill in the fridge before serving.
  7. Remember that the extra ice cubes you add when serving will dilute the drink so the taste will be milder. I recommend using the largest ice cubes you can get (these don’t melt as quickly as the smaller ones).
  8. Make sure to check if your food processor/blender/mixer can handle ice!
  9. This recipe yields about 15 fluid ounces/550ml of liquid. I used 7oz/200ml glasses for serving.

This is a GREAT recipe! Love the use of mint! I used Greek pedimezi (fermented grapes/raisins) to sweeten – less sugar and natural!5 stars

Thank you so much for your feedback, Angelina! It’s my go-to drink in summer. You can choose any sweetener you like. I had not heard of pediment before but will check it out. Thanks for the tip!
