How to make gingerbread spice mix:

The preparations takes literally 5 minutes unless you decide to turn whole spices into ground using a pestle and mortar like I did. I tell you, it wasn’t an easy job at all. I’d say a spice grinder would be pretty handy here.

Ingredients substitutions:

When it comes to making your own gingerbread spice mix, the possibilities are endless. The main ingredient here is ginger but apart from this spice, you can adjust the spices to your liking.

I also recommend using nutmeg and cinnamon. Then don’t worry if you don’t have the rest of the spices on hand. Maybe you can’t even find some of them in your local shop. If this is the case, you can definitely substitute or omit some of them.

You can also add ground anise to the mix.

How long will this gingerbread spice mix last?

Like most spices, you can keep this mix in your pantry for several months. Just make sure it is stored in a dry, cool place in an air-tight container or glass jar.

Unless you want to give this homemade gingerbread spice mix as a gift it’s better to make a smaller amount (like in the recipe below) rather than keeping it forever in your pantry. After all, gingerbread flavor is mostly used around Christmas.
