Ingredients for Blueberry Sauce
How to make blueberry sauce?

Combine blueberries, sugar, water (if using) and lemon juice in a saucepan and cook for about 15 minutes or until it has consistency you like.

How to make Blueberry Sauce Step 1

How to thicken blueberry sauce without cornstarch?

Cooking the sauce for a longer period will reduce the amount of liquid which will also thicken it.

When using frozen blueberries, you might completely omit adding the water, but you should keep an eye on them and stir regularly to avoid burning them.

Butter also acts as a thickener and so does sugar and lemon.

Serving suggestions

Blueberry sauce is the perfect topping for various breakfast recipes or desserts. Here are a few ideas:

  • Rice Pudding

You can also pour some over Blueberry Cheesecake or even chocolate pudding.

Tips for making the best blueberry sauce

  • Lemon zest can be added to the sauce, if you like.
  • I always use fresh lemon juice but if you only have bottled lemon juice, you can use that too. Add a little at first, then taste and add more if needed.
  • Both brown and white sugar work. If you prefer another sweetener then use what you like.
  • Butter makes this sauce extra delicious, so it is important to use real unsalted butter. Avoid buying butter substitutions.

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine blueberries, sugar, lemon juice and 2 tablespoons water. Cook on medium-high for about 12 minutes, stirring from time to time.
  • Stir in butter and cook for a further 2 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool down a bit (see note 5).
  • Enjoy with yogurt, oatmeal, French toast sticks, pancakes or anything you like.

Notes

  1. You can use either frozen or fresh blueberries. Fresh might need slightly more water than frozen.
  2. Brown sugar can be substituted with white sugar or another sweetener.
  3. Two ounces is about 4 tablespoons of butter. If you are after a richer taste, add more butter.
  4. Feel free to add less lemon juice, then taste it and add more only if you like.
  5. The sauce will thicken in the fridge. If you would like to serve it hot and have a thicker consistency, add about a teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 teaspoon of water to the sauce and cook for a further 2 minutes or until it has thickened. Add more if still too thin.
