Guys, today I have for you this poppy seed banana bread.
To make it I used my easy recipe for banana bread and twisted it a bit by adding poppy seeds and Greek yogurt in it. I was extremely pleased with the result – a moist loaf of poppy seed banana bread!

How to make banana bread with poppy seeds
So like the title says this quick banana bread has poppy seeds in it. I think it’s a great and simple way how to turn your ordinary homemade banana bread into something a bit different.
The preparation takes about 10 minutes, maybe even less. It will depend on how fast you can measure, mash and mix. I usually start with lining my loaf tin with baking paper. Now guys, if you don’t have a loaf tin, don’t panic! Use a bundt cake pan instead.
A 5-6 cup bundt pan should be perfect for this poppy seed banana bread. The bread won’t be as tall as if it was made in a loaf tin but tastes equally delicious!
At the same time turn on the oven. It takes about 10 minutes to heat it up which is exactly the prep time needed to make this banana poppy seed bread.
Now get a large bowl and throw in the bananas. Cut them and mash them. Add sugar, Greek yogurt and one egg. I used a hand mixer to combine these ingredients. You can use a wooden spoon as well. Just make sure they are all well combined.
Then it’s time to stir in the flour (combined with baking soda) and poppy seeds. The batter is now ready to be poured into your prepared tin.
Baking will take about 50 minutes. Bear in mind that every oven bakes differently. Just insert a wooden skewer and if it comes out clean, your poppy seed banana bread is ready.
Ingredient substitution
- Granulated Sugar – use brown sugar, if preferred.
- Greek Yogurt – sour cream can be used instead of Greek yogurt.

Poppy Seed Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 3 bananas , ripe (large)
- 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1½ cup all-purpose flour (220 grams)
- ⅓ cup Greek yogurt
- ½ cup granulated sugar (100 grams)
- 1 egg (large)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, cut the bananas and mash them using a fork.
- Add the sugar, Greek Yogurt and egg. Mix well with a hand mixer or wooden spatula.
- Add flour (combined with baking soda) and stir well.
- At last stir in poppy seeds.
- Pour in a loaf tin lined with baking paper and bake at 360° Fahrenheit /180°Celsius for 50 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean.
- Best served with butter, jam or honey!

I love the ingredients and the taste but mine seems to deflate after I take it out of the oven, and seems to dense. I bake it for 60 minutes, tired adding baking powder, etc but can’t get it right. Any tips??

Hi Allison. I am not sure what could have gone wrong as this bread usually doesn’t collapse. The quantity of bananas could mess slightly with the ratios, but I’ve never seen extra large bananas, so the 1.5 cups should work fine. I’ve just read that a small (overfilled) baking tin can cause the bread to fall in as there is not enough space for it to rise properly (I used a 2-pound/1kg loaf tin). Hope this helps!

Hi, never made banana bread with poppy seeds. So I tried it today. Replaced apf with whole wheat flour. Added 1/6 tbsp of milk and 2 tbsp of water to make the batter. Came out well.

I never baked a banana bread that it’s chewy , the center is moist but the crust it’s almost like eating a crusty bread . When I squeeze the slice between my fingers it bounces like it’s springy . I like the taste but I don’t care for the texture very weird . I didn’t follow the recipe maybe that’s why . I didn’t have yoghourt so I used milkademia milk with 1 table spoon of lemon juice , coconut palm sugar to replace white sugar 1 tsp baking powder , I don’t like baking soda and some comment said it didn’t rise much so I thought it would be ok ….so It’s not the recipe it’s probably all the changes I made ..good taste though .

Hi Roberta. I have not tested it with milk so can’t say. However, milk is runny while yogurt and sour cream are rather thick. For that reason I think it could affect the final result and would not substitute.
